Review by Try Wahyudinata

Calcium Light Night, the seminal album by Charles Ives, is a masterpiece of experimental classical music. The album features a collection of Ives' most innovative works, showcasing his unique approach to composition and his pioneering use of dissonance, polyrhythms, and unconventional harmonies.

The album opens with the haunting "Central Park in the Dark," a piece that captures the eerie and mysterious atmosphere of the park at night. The piece is followed by the lively and energetic "The Unanswered Question," which features a solo trumpet asking a question that is never answered by the orchestra.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Three Places in New England," a three-movement work that explores the sounds and rhythms of the New England landscape, and "The Housatonic at Stockbridge," a beautiful and contemplative piece inspired by Ives' love of nature.

Throughout the album, Ives' use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms creates a sense of dissonance and tension that is both challenging and rewarding for the listener. The album's title, Calcium Light Night, is a reference to the scientific phenomenon of calcium light, which Ives believed represented the complexity and beauty of the natural world.

About Charles Ives

Born: October 20, 1874 (Danbury, Connecticut, United States) Died: May 19, 1954 (New York, New York, United States) Charles Edward Ives was an American modernist composer. He is widely regarded as one of the first American composers of international significance. Ives combined the American popular and church-music traditions of his youth with European art music and was among the first composers to engage in a systematic program of experimental music. With musical techniques including polytonality, polyrhythm, tone clusters, aleatoric elements, and quarter tones he was foreshadowing virtually every major musical innovation of the 20th century. Ives's music was largely ignored during his lifetime as an active composer, but since then his reputation has greatly increased.
