Review by Celia Glower

Dee Dee Sharp's album "Do The Bird" is an excellent piece of work that showcases the singer's talent and versatility. Released in 1963, the album features a collection of upbeat songs that are guaranteed to get listeners up and dancing.

The album's title track "Do The Bird" is a catchy tune that became a hit in the early 60s. Sharp's powerful vocals and the song's infectious beat make it a standout track that still resonates with audiences today. Other highlights from the album include "Mashed Potato Time," "Ride," and "Slow Twistin,'" all of which showcase Sharp's ability to deliver energetic performances.

Sharp's versatility is also on display on the album. From the upbeat and playful "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" to the soulful ballad "I Really Love You," Sharp shows that she can tackle a range of musical styles with ease.

This is a re-recording, but her voice is so beautiful that it's interesting to hear a different take. Not many re-recordings are this good.

Memories won't leave like some infatuated suitors do; no, not with such festive groove and bounce coming from Dee Dee Sharp and her Combo.

My Primary School 'good' friend...O 'P' B!

"My I have this dance?"

And that math teacher who loved to whip students into 'cutting' and failing his classes simply for attempting to make, for example, an eight with two zeros one on the other - a non-standard letter-writing method approach.

How warped was his thinking!

Thanks for permitting me into your musical world!

On this day in 1963 {February 15th} Dee Dee Sharp was the scheduled guest* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time she didn't have a record on Billboard's Top 100, but nine days later on Feb. 24th her "Do The Bird" entered the chart at position #65, six weeks later it would peak at #10 {for 2 weeks} and it spent eleven weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #8 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
"Do The Bird" was her fifth straight Top 10 record, started with "Mashed Potato Time"** {#2 for 2 weeks in 1962}, "Slow Twistin'" {a duet with Chubby Checker, #3 in 1962}, "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" {#9 in 1962}, "Ride!" {#5 in 1962}, and finally "Do The Bird"...
Besides the five above records, she had five other records make the Top 100; "Rock Me In The Cradle of Love" {#43 in 1963},"Wild!" {#33 in 1963}, "Where Did I Go Wrong" {#82 in 1964}, "Willyam, Willyam" {#97 in 1964}, and "I Really Love you" {#78 in 1965}...
Dee Dee Sharp, born Dione LaRue, will celebrate her 73rd birthday come this September 9th {2018}...
* Couldn't find on the internet if she actually did appear on 'Bandstand' that day...
** In addition, the two weeks that "Mashed Potato Time" was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Soldier Boy" by the Shirelles...
